Fun Facts that Don't Seem Real

Here are some interesting, weird, and genuinely interesting facts that might sound fake but are totally true:

  • Germany has more castles than there are McDonald's in the United States. Yep, you heard that right. Germany is estimated to have 25,000 castles, and there are around 13,000 McDonald's locations in America.
  • In Washington state, there's a real-life law stating it's illegal to kill bigfoot and other sasquatch-like creatures. And you know what? Good for them.
  • Dogs are one of the three deadliest animals in the UK. The other two are bees and cows.
  • There are caves in Missouri that store 1.4 billion pounds of government-owned cheese. Located deep in the Ozark Mountains in limestone-converted mines, the caves are kept at a perfect 36ºF.
  • Cornflakes were invented to suppress sexual impulses and desires. John Harvey Kellogg invented cornflakes in 1894, but it was later used as part of an extreme diet promoted by his church to basically suppress horniness.

Kellog thought sex and masturbation were abnormal and unhealthy, so he believed cornflakes — and their lack of flavor — would help fight off any desire.

  • A single cloud can weigh about 550 tons or more.
  • Believe it or not, Canadians eat more Kraft macaroni and cheese than Americans. Like, 55% more. buzzfeed

Say Bye-Bye to a Familiar Friend

In case you didn't know, the US postal service is in the process of replacing their old cars.

The new design is going to look like this:

new style mail truck

The cars were unveiled in 2022, and the postal service plans to deploy 66,000 trucks by 2028. The new trucks include advanced safety features, better driver ergonomics, and better fuel efficiency.

One tweet about the ergonomics is going viral:today i learned the Oshkosh NGDV (next generation delivery vehicle) looks like this because the USPS contract mandated that the cabin must be tall enough for a 95th percentile male (6'2) to stand up but low enough for a 5th percentile female (4'11) to see over the hood

According to the USPS, the windowsill on the right side of the mail truck needs to be as low as the mailbox so the postperson doesn't have to strain their arms or wrists. The new design fixes that. The new windowsill also works for shorter people (5th percentile female) to taller people (95th percentile male), making sure everyone is able to deliver mail comfortably and efficiently.

The contract award, made to Oshkosh Defense, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, an American industrial company that designs and builds specialty trucks, military vehicles, truck bodies, airport fire apparatus, and access equipment. Up to 160,000 vehicles will be built in a new facility. Four variants of the NGDV are expected to be in fleet use: both gasoline-powered and battery-electric, driving either the front wheels or all four wheels. buzzfeed; wikipedia
